The Secret

March 27, 2010

My mother is an avid believer in The Secret—some ridiculous, pseudo spiritual self-help book that Oprah made famous back in 2006, via her weird book cult aimed at simultaneously empowering and undermining desperate housewives. The Secret is the ramblings of some Australian bitch named Rhonda Byrne, claiming that focused positive thinking can result in increased wealth, health, happiness, etc. To be rich, you have to think like a rich person. To be happy, you have to think like a happy…

Egotistical Punk

March 25, 2010

I wake up to Mavi shaking me violently. “Look, I need a favor,” she says, frenzied. “I have a friend coming to stay with me from Austria today—some kid I met while street casting punks for that shoot in Pop last year—but I’m working all day. Can you look after him while I’m gone?” Mavi works in fashion. She’s almost always head to toe in Rock Owens. Her true love, however, is her myriad of weirdo sidekicks. She’s constantly…

The Stairwell

March 22, 2010

When I first started squatting I lived in a stairwell. You know those really huge, factory stairwells that have a landing halfway up? Well that landing was my bedroom. This was roughly five years ago now. I had just dropped out of university and had nowhere to live. Luckily, my new, weird shaman friend Matthew offered me a place in his squat—an abandoned lift factory in southeast London. I was hesitant at first, as I wasn’t sure my naive, eighteen-year-old…

I’m A Lesbian I Think

March 13, 2010

Pic by Bella Howard I’ve been thinking for a while now about becoming a full-time lesbian because being a lesbian is really in and edgy and probably guys think lesbians are hot or something, right? Who knows. I definitely don’t. Recently I’ve come to realize I actually have no clue what guys are into, which is another reason why queer seems like the best way to go. Plus most guys in London are secretly gay anyways. Generally speaking, once I…

Dear Diary

March 8, 2010

On Sunday night I attended the eviction party of a squat that I lived in for six months nearly five years ago (and by “lived in” I mean I shared a couch with an ecstasy addict whose wardrobe consisted solely of neon body suits). Countless numbers of people lived in that squat during its five year existence—many of whom are now my friends—so I was really excited at the prospect of going back, reminiscing, and celebrating the building’s final night.…

John “Hoppy” Hopkins Invented the 1960’s

March 4, 2010

British photographer and political activist John “Hoppy” Hopkins spent the 1960s documenting jazz, poetry, The Rolling Stones, Martin Luther King, the sexual revolution – basically everything that defined the decade. When he wasn’t taking iconic photographs, he was launching the legendary UFO club in London, with Pink Floyd as its resident band. Also, in 1966 Hoppy and friends founded the anarchist newspaper IT (International Times). Today he’s an activist for peace and for the circulation of information, and at…

Lent

March 1, 2010

Today marks the seventh day of Lent. For all you non-Christians out there, Lent is the Christian season of preparation leading up to Easter. It’s basically forty days worth of praying, repentance and fasting, meant to prepare the believer for the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Growing up, Lent was a big deal in the Sciortino household. Each year my parents would force my brother and me to sacrifice one of our favorite things, saying it would “strengthen…
