A Day in the Life: Petra Collins

I am so smitten with Petra Collins! Petra is a 19 year old photographer from Toronto. Her beautiful photographs of young girls are simultaneously innocent and erotic–a combination that sometimes makes you feel kind of weird inside, but in the best way possible. Serious Lolita vibes! Petra shoots for mags like Vice and Jacques, and is also a staff member at the amazing Rookie Magazine, the teen magazine for girls started by Tavi Gevinson. Plus Petra is the founder and curator of The Ardorous, an online art collective showcasing the works of young, female artists. And if it’s not already impressive enough that she’s done all of that while still in her teens, she’s also really smart and funny and dresses amazingly and is so beautiful and cool and… damn, the girl really is the whole package. Below is a day in her life.

Hello friends, my name is Petra Collins. On this day I did a photoshoot for Rookie Mag called Come Sail Away. The shoot was pretty much my ultimate dream – I got to create my own high school dance. I shot it in my old high school, which my sister still goes to. She brought along all her super cute girl and guy friends, they dressed up in cute clothes, I shot them making out, everyone danced, we listened to Sean Paul, they ate cupcakes, Cheetohs, and pop. It was a pretty fun day.

The girls bathroom. EerieĀ as fuck.

The super pretty accessories Chloe brought to the shoot.

CUPCAKES! The night before the shoot my boyfriend Avery took me to Costco and bought me so many snacks to photograph (eat).

Me and my sister’s friend Feli. ( I had to make a cameo because I NEEDED to attend the dance of my dreams!)

Chloe, Anna and the boys getting really hyper – the boys went into the gym supply closet and stole a basketball, which totally stressed me out because it almost landed on the food table like twice.

Chloe smearing her make-up for her “Miss World” moment.

The food table after the shoot – ravaged.

Anna, my sister, after the shoot. She’s stressing out because we had so much to clean up.

A Day in the Life: SSION

I <3 SSION!

For this Day in the Life Cody Critcheloe–the brain behind the unhinged art beast that is SSION–took some behind-the-scenes photos on the shoot for his new video “My Love Grows in the Dark”. The song is the first single from the physical release of SSION’s third album, Bent. However, most SSION fans are already familiar with the record, as Cody put it up as a free download on the SSION website last Summer, to coincide with a week of performances he did at MoMA’s PS1 museum to premier the record. I was lucky enough to see Cody at MoMA, and it was one of the most spectacular live performances I have ever seen. I’ve been listening to Bent on repeat ever since. It’s also GREAT to work out to, FYI.

If you aren’t familiar with SSION then OMG start Googling because you’re missing out on the best thing ever. Since 1997 SSION has released three albums, made a feature film, toured with bands like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Fisherspooner, directed music videos for artists like Peaches and the Gossip, and exhibited art in cities all over the world. AKA you have a lot of catching up to do. Here’s one of my favorite ever SSION videos, just to get you started.

Hi, I’m Cody. Below are some photos from our video shoot, taken by Megan Mantia. I directed the video along with my buddy Chris Good. It was shot in Kansas City at my friend Jaimie Warren‘s real-life doll house. The image at the top of the post is a sketch of the dinning room I did prior to the shoot.

We took over the first floor of her house for a few days. Each room had a different theme.

The video is sort of a backhanded version of a pop star–almost the antethisis of a pop star. That’s why my face is blown out until the very end of the video. You can’t really see me, the right lighting can make anyone look good, the more extreme the more it erases flaws, age, blah blah blah. Think Gwen Stefani in “Underneath it All”. Haha. I wanted to do it so extreme that the only thing left were my eyes, moustache and mouth. Then at the end is the reveal: bald, tons of make-up, daylight… basically, I’m a WITCH!

We bought 90% of the props and scenery at Wal-Mart and Home Hepot and returned everything after the shoot, so it basically cost no money. We even returned the goldfish and the opened fish food to Petsmart for a full refund. They are like rental places if you want them to be.

The song was written about a sex club – everything is completely dark, you have to feel your way around. No one really sees me in the video and if they do, they are indifferent. I walk through this house where everyone is completely self-obsessed. This video will be part of a larger narrative of videos for the album Bent.

Jaimie has four roomies who are really cool, they even helped out with shaving my head, which took ten people.

And FINALLY, the video!

P.S. SSION are playing TONIGHT at the Highline Ballroom in NYC! COME!!!

A Day in the Life: Matthew Stone

Matthew Stone and May Anderson
Ā
Hi! I’m Matthew Stone, a friend of Karley’s from London. We lived together in the ‘lift factory’ squat in Walworth that predates Squallyoaks (which I opened). I somehow managed to escape quite a lot of embarrassing outings of my life on early Slutever, but you can see me breaking my arm with Karley in this spoof Madonna video we made here.Ā  I’m an artist and about a month ago I went to Miami Art Basel to install a series of sculptures that were displayed at the Mondrian hotel. Karley came along for the ride. I use photography in the artworks I make, but I also shoot loads of more casual images that don’t really go anywhere. Karley has always said I should do something with them online, so I have started a Tumblr for them called infinitytimesinfinity (āˆž x āˆž) . This guest post is a sort of launch for it. The photos below are from more than one day in my life in Miami, but Karley said that was OK! I have also included some conversations IĀ  had with some of the people in the photographs. Please click the links! I think that conversation is a great artform. Really good conversation not only changes the lives of those involved, it can change the world.

The first night we arrived in Miami we had no car, so we waited outside the house for a cab that took over an hour to arrive. I found a fallen coconut in the street and bashed it open on a rock, it kept us going until the taxi came and then we went for Mexican food.

This is one of a pair of works I installed at The Hole gallery booth at the NADA art fair. Kathy Grayson who runs the space decided to have two identical twin booths next to each other with similar or ‘twinned’ works in each, so that visitors double took as they mindlessly trod their way around the fair. Wake up! You’ll see the identical twins that manned the booth later on.

This is Kathy meditating on what to install.

This is the garden for the house that The Hole booked for all the artists, helpers, internet band members and hangers-on to stay in. It was beautiful and right on the bay. On the first day I saw dolphins pass by. I worked on the construction of the sculptures here with Jon (pictured).

This is the moment where we finished the first sculpture. They are made from plywood, hinges and screws. I design them on a 3D computer program and then map the photos to the shapes on each side. I then have the wood printed and cut using a computer controlled router. They arrive flatpacked and I put them together (with help) using hinges. The hinges are amazing; they sort of do the geometrical thinking and work out all the complex angles for me.

Sculpture number two! We made seven in total, they are about 7-8 feet high. I like the idea of solid structures that appear to pass through each other and #occupy the same space. I feel like people do that with each other without realising.

This is Jon and Jorge, they also run The Hole with Kathy and basically work harder than anyone you have ever met. I can’t think of a way to thank them enough for the energy they have put into my work in the last couple of months. <3

Jeanette Hayes (center) is an important BBM artist. She designs really elaborate custom BBM names and artworks for her friends. I bought one from her for $20, thus establishing the market for Blackberry Messenger artworks.

This is me, Gareth Pugh, Daphne Guiness & Carson McColl at the dinner we had at the Mondrian. It was really fancy. Gareth and I have been friends since we were in student accommodation together. We have always worked together and I still make music for his fashion shows.

This is Dee and Ricky! They are the cute identical(?) twins who worked the Hole booth(s) at the Nada fair. I fancy one of them. They are really creative and have their own business making jewellery and run a pop-up restaurant in Brooklyn.

Mavi Staiano & Jack Donoghue

9:45PM (The Mondrian Hotel, Miami)
Karley : Ā High five on life!!
Mavi : Fun forever!
Matthew : Are we just getting happier in general or is it a 2012 thing?
Mavi : I think its a 2012 thing.
Matthew : Sometimes I feel like I am so happy that I’m actually about to explode. I have to consciously imagine my entire body bursting into a cloud of liquid. Its like if I don’t visualize it, it might really happen. Part of me wouldn’t mind if it did. Its a body nostalgia, I just bounce around like a pinball between these feelings of fear, excitement and utter limitlessness.
Karley : That’s nice.

May Anderson, Jeanette Hayes, Fabiola Beracasa & Karley ‘Slutever’ Sciortino. Bitches onĀ  the left and honeys on the right.

4:00PM (Poolside, The Standard Hotel, Miami)
Piper : If the 90’s were all about air quotes, then this generation is absolutely the hashtag.
Mavi : We do it with our fingers.
Matthew: Haha.. you can do both with your fingers!! From airquotes into the #…
Mavi: #ashtag!!
Matthew: Don’t say it out loud! Say it with your fingers. Wait!! Its not generation-X or gen-Y or whatever anymore…. Its Generation-# ahaha!!

Salem stayed in The Hole house and played two gigs. John, Jack and Heather.

This was when The Hole presented Salem at the Delano Hotel. They played on the edge of the pool as you can see. Lots of people said it was the best party of the week.

They rented two strippers who danced/made out/had sexĀ  in the pool while Salem played.

Jeanette, Derek Blasberg & Jack Donoghue living it up.

Hot mess.

Sexual in the back of a cab.

This guy fell asleep in Le Baron. The guy pinching his nose is Benjamin Moreau, he wanted a copy of this photo so he could blackmail the sleeping guy.

This is Cyprien Gallard. Apparently I was rude to him when I was drunk. This is what Karley and my friend Tea had to say about him once.

Blue steel.

Alex Shulan, Jack Donoghue & Jeanette Hayes.

3:34 AM (Upstairs bedroom, 1116, 88th St, Miami Surfside)
Jack : (Mumbles) This is self-control. (Playful punch) WAKE UP! …………….. What are dreams?
Matthew : Sometimes they are a way of processing what has happened in the day and other times they are journeys to other worlds.
Jack : Do you really believe that? I never dream. (Gets into bed)
Matthew : Yes you do.
Jack : Everyone says that, but I don’t.
Matthew : Sometimes I have dreams that I feel like I remember, but I can’t actually imagine a single word or image to describe them. Its just a full and totally abstract feeling.
But somehow it feels like all the details are still there. …. Maybe thats what happens if you travel in a dream to a place beyond all worldly recognition. Do you know what I mean?
Jack: Yeah.

Body pile.

Cute.

2:12PM (The Beach, Miami)
Mavi : OMG!! MATTHEW I HAVE TO TELL YOU WHAT HAPPENED IN THE TAXI!!:

Mavi recounts:
Jeanette : Sir, would you mind picking me up again in an hour to take me to the airport?
Taxi driver : No it’s not possible.
Jeanette : Please sir, i don’t know how to find another taxi here.
Taxi driver : No I can’t it’s not possible, I can’t take you.
Mavi : That’s not true! Can I just say something please? Stop the car! Turn the radio off! (Straight, earnest face, direct eye contact with driver.) Everything is possible and love changes everything.
Taxi driver : (Pauses, trys to look annoyed, gives up, bursts out laughing) OK, I’ll pick you up in an hour. .

Matthew : That’s amazing!!
Mavi : You taught me that.
Matthew : What? Everything is possible?
Mavi : And love changes everything.
Matthew : No I didn’t, its just true!

EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE AND LOVE CHANGES EVERYTHING.

A Day in the Life: Dev Hynes

Wait… Blood Orange is like soooo cool.

Hello, my name is Devonte Hynes aka Black Gosling, aka Kanye Best, aka Judge Doobie, aka Black Forest Ghetto aka GOD.

I live in New York City but also spend some time in New York FUCKING City. When I’m not there I tend to be in LA, which is where these photos were taken.

About the pics: I just found this roll of film in between two couch cushions, underneath Julie, Lucy, Suzanne, and Talisha (girls that I woke up to find sleeping on my couch, obvs). They were taken over 48 hours, so technically it’s two days in my life, not one. Whatever. Enjoy my sick fucking life and don’t even attempt to live vicariously through me… I WILL FIND OUT.

Me looking sick as fuck.

A painting I did of Karl Malone aka “THE LEGEND” from the Utah Jazz looking sick as fuck. What, you thought niggas couldn’t paint !??!?!

Venus X in front of Lady Tragik’s Camaro looking sick as fuck. This is the only way I roll.

Look at my ponytail silhouette looking sick as fuck.

We went to some party that yet again we were PAID to go to (#HateMyLife). But whatever, here’s Theophilus London and Venus X looking sick as fuck.

Oh you don’t know about the L.A Lakers? This is the only Laker I fuck with, fuck them other old Niggas. Wassup Ron Artest looking sick as fuck in your open top buttoned shirt, tie and trilby combo.

Common turned up and did a live P.A and dropped literally 30 seconds of rap over mp3’s of his music, no, not instrumentals, I’m talking the actual tracks. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was just Spotify offline mode.. anyway, you know he got like, 30 Gs just for turning up to this shit, sick as fuck.

Obligatory party shot featuring the above players looking sick as fuck.

Remember the girls from my couch?

After getting our drank and dank on, Har Mar Superstar rocked up to my room. I got my “photographer” skills on and took some “shots”.

Breakfast healing. I was indeed, quite literally, sick as fuck :-(

Yasmine Kittles in Rite Aidā€¦ let it be known that this shit is my second choice after Duane Reade.

Some natural healing with Aaron Pfenning and Nedelle Torissi.

“Solo” at the back of some music venue that we tore the fuck up. They’re all the same.

Finally chilled at Liz Lee’s Star Wars pad. Is there anywhere else to go from here?

Well, that’s the end of 48 hours in my sick as fuck life. I love you all for reading this, but not in a romantic way… in the way where I’ll spend two more minutes in bed with you in the morning before going to Jamba Juice. HAPPY HOLIDAYS !!!

A Day in the Life: Is Tropical

Weirdly hot?

I lived with Simon, Gary and Dom for many years, back when we were squatters living in various disgusting, derelict buildings around London. Back then we bathed out of buckets, survived on food we found in supermarket garbage bins, and made wigs out of meat. Now they’re in a band called Is Tropical and are randomly kind of famous or whatever, and get flown around the world to play their music in front of people. The video for their last single, The Greeks, was very edgy and controversial and became an internet meme. Their new video has boobs in it. See below:

Hi! We’re Is Tropical. We’ve been fans of Slutever since before the blog Slutever even existed. So there! We win! We’re on tour around Europe at the moment. This was 24 hours in our life:

Copenhagen, Rush Club, 1.45am. View from stage, still with a crushing hangover.

Copenhagen, Drone, 4.30am. DanishĀ lady friends sort us out with speedy coke.

Copenhagen, streets, 5ish am. Gary rides to the hotel on a little girl’s bike.

Copenhagen, 6ish am. Found the best country in the world!!!

Ferry to Sweden, 9am. Cold, tired crossing.

On ferry, 9.30am. Dale finds a massive tub. [This is Karley interjecting to say that, as you may remember, Dale is our old squatmate who used to dye all of his food blue and aspire to look like a tree.]

Driving through Sweden, 3pm. Gary and the kick ass shades.

Driving, sometime. Superfan tattoo. (Obviously)

Tour tattoo.

Stockholm, Debaser, 11.40pm. View from the stage. As you can see, our fans are mainly young boys.

Stockholm, Debaser, 1am. Flogging some merch with Dale.

Stockholm, Port, 3ish am. Greenpeace boat, Rainbow Warrior 3, was present for the gig so there where lots of bears, fish and lions in the crowd. Plus backstage we got attacked by a rat.

Stockholm, Hotel, 8am. Quick stop at the hotel before flying. The hotel doing the classy hotel toilet roll fold but still won’t change it if there’s a few plies left.

The end! Slutever forever!

A Day in the Life: The Felice Brothers

The Felice Brothers are currently on tour around the greatest country on earth–AKA America–promoting their (amazing) new album, Celebration Florida. I asked my buddy Josh, the bassist, to contribute to A Day in the Life so that that all of us normal people could getĀ glimpseĀ of what it’s like to live the glamorous life of a touring rock n’ roll star. (Josh also recently dished out some quality advice for Ask Slutever, so if you haven’t read that yet, you can do so HERE.) OK, here goes!

Hi. My name is Josh. My friends and I drive places and make noise in front of people. This day happened to us.

Waking up in our Winnebago. (Fashion)

Living a life of luxury. Ian brushes his teeth in the biggest bathroom of all time. It’s called outside.

I know it looks like a shitty page in a calendar but this is what we slept next to. It’s called a tree near a bay, for those staring at their computer.

Smoke and Dress is the only place I go to buy ballroom dresses, tuxedos for five year olds, and cartons of Pall Malls.

This is a poster of a girl having fun.

We drew pictures of how we felt at the moment. Apparently we all feel like sad tortured kittens. I drew myself as “Baby”.

Us talking about really important stuff that bands usually talk about, like the economy and food and stock options. And Ā morality.

A library full of really interesting out of print books.

IĀ  ain’t gonna toot my own horn but this photo is very artistic. It is so art.

Me being super dreamy.

What dreams look like.

A Day in the Life: Sandy Kim

Self portrait of Sandy and her bf, Colby

More new new new stuff on Slutever! Today is the start of a new series called A Day in the Life, where I’m enlisting lots of amazing, cool, talented, interesting, weird/hot people to document a day in their life and share it with us. Exciting, right? The first installment is by the amazing photographer, Sandy Kim! I’ve been a fan of Sandy’s for years, ever since the first time I looked at her blog and fell totally in love with her intensely intimate (and at times gross) documentary photography. Her photos tend to involve bodily fluids and tall skinny boys with long hair–two of my all time favorite things! I finally got to meet her earlier this year on a photoshoot with Ryan McGinley, where he had us make-out with each other naked on various rooftops around NYC for 5 hours. It was the perfect first meeting, if you ask me.

Hi, I’m Sandy. Last week I went to LA to visit my parents. This is what happened…

Mom, Dad and I drive to Mount Maldy to fish in a trout pond.

We catch two trouts and eat it as sashimi!

Around 5pm I convince my mom to let me drive to meet Liza and Matt at their recording studio. Their band is called Starr.

At 9 pm I drop the car back off at my momā€™s and walk over to Liza and Mattā€™s apartment. On the way I see this neon light that says ā€˜dwit gol mokā€™ in Korean, which translates to ā€˜back alleyā€™ in English. Iā€™m not sure why I took a picture of this sign. I guess I just liked the way it looked.

Liza’s house!

She takes me to her roof.

Liza lives at the Gay Lord. Supposedly it’s haunted.

There is an epic view of LA from the Gaylord roof.

We go back downstairs to their apartment and hang out for a while.

Liza and I decide to go meet David, Nicky, Rhett, Marlon, and Mercedes at the pool hall right around the corner.

Got the the pool hall but the game was already over so we walked to 7-11 to pick up beers and saw this cool sign on the way.

Friends buying beer.

David waits outside of 7-11.

Mercedes Mercedes Mercedes!

#Friendz4Life

We head to the next party at Aaron brown’s house. I finally meet his gf Natasha.

Aaron Brown

Party

Drunk Laura and maybe Brian is drunk too.

We attempt to go the next party at 4am. Obviously a bust. Fuck you I’m going home! Goodnight!
